What is a Sugar Test in Pregnancy?

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is a sugar loading test.

It is performed between 24-28 weeks of gestation to detect gestational diabetes mellitus (gestational diabetes).

When is a sugar test done during pregnancy?

It is performed between 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. However, in those who give birth to large babies and those with a family history of diabetes, the screening test is performed at earlier weeks.

How to test for diabetes during pregnancy?

50 g is a screening test and if the result is risky, a 100 g diagnostic test is performed. On the other hand, a 75 g sugar loading test is performed without any screening test. 

Is it necessary to fast for a sugar test during pregnancy?

There is no need to fast only for the 50g sugar loading test. At 75 and 100 g, 8 hours fasting is required.

Why is a sugar loading test performed during pregnancy?

It is performed to detect gestational diabetes or gestational diabetes. 

What is gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes or gestational diabetes mellitus is diabetes mellitus that occurs for the first time during pregnancy in people who did not have diabetes before.

In a 50 g sugar loading test, the first hour sugar level is 140 mg/dl and above. These patients undergo a 100 g sugar loading test.

A 75 g sugar loading test is sufficient for diagnosis. It is a two-hour test. The patient comes hungry and fasting, first hour and second hour blood glucose levels are checked.

Why is a sugar loading test done during pregnancy?

Gestational diabetes can cause the baby to grow too big, i.e. fetal macrosomia. This can cause difficult delivery and harm to the baby and the mother. A large baby can also cause difficult delivery, shoulders can get stuck and the baby can be harmed. If the baby is large, cesarean section is performed. Normal delivery is not preferred.

What can gestational diabetes cause?

Untreated or uncontrolled high blood glucose levels can lead to the development of a large baby, low sugar in the baby after birth, respiratory distress in the baby after birth, developmental disorders in the womb, diseases and anomalies such as heart, kidney, brain, nervous system and digestive system in the baby.

Gestational diabetes can cause high blood pressure in the mother, that is, pregnancy poisoning, premature birth, pregnancy losses, and infant deaths in the womb.

Is it okay not to take a sugar test during pregnancy?

Not taking the test means taking the risks of your gestational diabetes. It can be controlled with blood glucose monitoring, but this method will not be accurate and it will be difficult to catch borderline patients.

Does a sugar loading test during pregnancy harm the baby and the mother?

Sugar loading test during pregnancy does not harm the baby. It does not harm the mother. 

The sugar ingested during the test is equivalent to two slices of baklava or one slice of cake. 

A sugar loading test will never harm the baby. The test should be done to protect yourself and your baby.

How is gestational diabetes treated?

Gestational diabetes is primarily treated with diet and exercise. If this is not successful, insulin therapy is used.
