Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy, What is Curettage?

Voluntary termination of pregnancy is the termination of pregnancies under 10 weeks, regardless of whether married or single. Women over 18 years of age can terminate their pregnancies voluntarily and women under 18 years of age can terminate their pregnancies with the permission of the mother or father's prosecutor's office.

Up to how many weeks can I have a termination of pregnancy?

Less than 10 weeks of gestation.

How is curettage performed?

Curettage can be performed under general anesthesia and sometimes under local anesthesia without sedation. The patient has the choice. The uterus is entered vaginally through the cervix and the pregnancy material is evacuated. After the bleeding is controlled, the procedure is terminated with ultrasonography. 

What are the problems of having a curettage?

Excessive bleeding, the pregnancy material may remain inside, the uterus may perforate, intrauterine adhesions may occur. Very rarely, the pregnancy material may mix with the blood and embolism, i.e. clotting, may occur. This can have serious consequences.

What should I do to avoid problems during curettage?

If curettage is not performed under appropriate conditions and by trained personnel, serious consequences can occur. The team performing the curettage procedure must be experienced. 

What happens after the curettage procedure?

You can be discharged 1 hour after the curettage and return to your normal life.

Do I need to be hungry for the curettage procedure?

The patient should be fasted for at least 6 hours during the ciretage procedure.

I had a curettage, does it cause infertility?

Curettage does not cause infertility. In repeated curettage, if the procedure is not performed properly, infertility can sometimes develop if intrauterine adhesions form. but when treated, pregnancy can occur.

When can I get pregnant again after curettage?

Contraception for 2 months is recommended for recovery after curettage.

Is there a lot of bleeding after curettage?

If the curettage is done properly, there is no bleeding.

Can uterine perforation occur during curettage?

Uterine perforation may rarely occur during the curettage procedure. In this case, follow-up and, if necessary, surgery (laparoscopic surgery) may be required. Your doctor should be experienced in this area.

What should be done after curettage if there is blood incompatibility?

Blood incompatibility must be investigated before curettage. If any, an injection should be given to prevent blood incompatibility after the procedure. If you get your blood incompatibility injection, you will not have any problems.
